Instrument Operator (Richmond)

Rice is seeking an Instrument Operator to join our field team in Richmond, VA.

What You'll Do

• Assist the Survey Crew Chief in performing various types of surveys, including Boundary Surveys, Topographic Surveys, Construction Surveys, ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, Right-of-Way Surveys, and other surveying projects.

• Operate and maintain survey equipment such as GNSS/GPS receivers, robotic total stations, digital levels, data collectors, and other field technology. Previous experience is welcome but not required. We are willing to train the right candidate.

• Assist with gathering field information, collecting survey data, and maintaining accurate records to support project deliverables.

• Upload and download survey data, maintain field equipment, and ensure survey vehicles, tools, and supplies are properly cared for and organized.

• Communicate with Crew Chiefs and office staff to understand project requirements and support efficient field operations.

• Follow established safety procedures, traffic control requirements, and company policies to ensure a safe work environment.

• Attend safety meetings, training sessions, and other company meetings as required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

• Genuine interest in surveying, geospatial technology, or related outdoor work.

• Experience operating survey equipment is a plus but not required. Rice will train motivated candidates.

• Ability to learn survey methods, procedures, equipment, and data collection techniques.

• Good communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.

• Basic computer and mathematical skills.

• Ability to travel overnight and work overtime as needed.

• Pass a pre-employment driver's license background check and maintain a satisfactory driving record.

• Must successfully pass periodic drug testing as required by company policy.

• Healthy physical condition and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, rough terrain, and active construction environments.
