Survey Instrument Operator

Rice Associates, Inc. is seeking a Survey Instrument Operator in our Manassas office. 

Role and Responsibility

  • Provides day-to-day supervision of assigned survey field crew on quality and survey methodology, including training and mentoring of junior level employees.

  • Works independently as a one-person crew, as needed.

  • Selects and applies appropriate equipment to accurately perform the services.

  • Coordinates with client and/or other stakeholders to provide survey services.

  • Follows policy and procedures to ensure all work is done accurately and efficiently.

  • Identifies controls for property lines and makes decisions regarding how to proceed with the survey.

  • Gathers all necessary information needed to properly perform the survey in the most time efficient manner.

  • Makes calculations and maintains records essential to survey.

  • Oversees and coordinates the effective maintenance and operation of vehicles, equipment, tools, and supplies.

  • Responds appropriately to all employee performance issues of assigned survey field crew.

  • Continually advances knowledge with upgrades in technology.

  • Works with Field Coordinator to prepare field schedule.

  • Selects and implements proper maintenance of traffic control signs.

  • Performs project set up and ensures work is executed in accordance to project scope.

  • Assists with project estimating if necessary.

  • Performs initial QA/QC of all paperwork received from the field employees.

  • Performs all Survey Instrument Operator functions when needed.

  • Understands and interprets utility and highway design plans, atlases, and record drawings.

  • Represents and communicates on behalf of RA and crew when encountering third parties in the field.

  • Trains other crew members.

  • Maintains expert knowledge of policies and procedures of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

  • Maintains certifications (including traffic control) related to their role.

  • Ensures that company policies and procedures are being followed in the field so that all work is done accurately and efficiently.

  • Reviews individual timesheets and crew sheets for correctness.

  • Completes their timesheet daily and submits it promptly for weekly review and approval.

  • Attends meetings in and out of the office, including Safety Meetings.

  • Maintains regular, predictable, and punctual attendance to ensure on-time crew departure to job sites.

  • Maintains a valid driver’s license.

  • Travels as needed, occasionally overnight.

  • Other tasks as needed.

 Qualifications and Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent (minimum).

  • Heavy outdoor work in all types of weather conditions.

  • 3-5 years of experience in supervising field crews.

  • Frequent travel with multiple overnight stays.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Superior collaboration and communication skills.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • Detail oriented and ability to work with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Ability and willingness to work overtime as needed.

Land Surveyor

Rice Associates, Inc. is seeking a Land Surveyor in our Manassas office. 

Role and Responsibility

  • Researches property ownership for deeds, plats, easements, dedications and other burdens or benefits at local County Recorder offices and online.

  • Requests information from highway departments, municipalities, etc. that relate to property being surveyed and adding information to CAD drawing.

  • Performs complex survey measurements and computations including field note reduction.

  • Responsible for boundary survey calculations, analysis and final map checking, abstracting title data.

  • Performs and/or directs CAD production toward set goals.

  • Performs and/or directs GIS data collection and analysis for various applications.

  • Performs calculations to determine earth curvature corrections, atmospheric impacts on measurements, traverse closures and adjustments, azimuths, level runs, and placement of markers.

  • Prepares Construction, Subdivision, ALTA, Boundary, Topographic, and Special Surveys, Legal Descriptions and Surveying Exhibits to fit client needs.

  • Manages CAD generated surface models and generates accurate contours, cross sections, and profile drawings for engineering design.

  • Performs quality control checks of plats and drawings prepared by other surveyors and/or technicians.

  • Assists, as needed, the Project Manager and Operations with all aspects of field crew preparation.

  • Prepares digital terrain models and contouring.

  • Prepares and manages construction layout calculations for field staff.

  • Performs project research and setup as needed.

  • Prepares as-built, boundary, topographic, tree, and utility survey deliverables.

  • Works in the field on as-needed basis and maintains a general understanding of safe traffic procedures.

  • Continually advances knowledge with upgrades in technology.

  • Maintains licenses, memberships, and affiliations related to their role.

  • Seals/signs deliverables where he/she has exercised direct control and personal supervision of the project, as needed.

  • Completes their timesheet daily and submits it promptly for weekly review and approval.

  • Attends meetings in and out of the office, including Safety Meetings.

  • Maintains a valid driver’s license.

  • Travels as needed, occasionally overnight.

  • Other tasks as needed.

     Qualifications and Skills

  • 1-3 years of survey (office and field) experience required.

  • Licensed as a Land Surveyor in their state of residence and willingness to obtain licenses in adjacent states.

  • Proficiency with the use of data collection software and survey equipment (GPS, Robotics, Total Stations, Levels, and Data Collectors).

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills.

  • Excellent computer and data collector skills.

  • Excellent mathematical skills.

  • Ability and willingness to work overtime as needed.

CADD Technician

Rice Associates, Inc. is seeking a CADD Technician in our Manassas office. 

Role and Responsibility

  • Drafts boundary, ALTA, topographic, right-of way acquisition, transmission line, transportation, and construction surveys.

  • Assist the Project Manager with all aspects of field crew preparation.

  • Processes field collection files and database maintenance.

  • Prepares digital terrain models and contouring.

  • Responsible for deed, plat and document research, and title and easement review.

  • Prepares as-built, boundary, topographic, tree, and utility survey deliverables.

  • Works in the field on as-needed basis and maintains a general understanding of safe traffic procedures.

  • Works independently as required.

  • Continually advances knowledge with upgrades in technology.

  • Follows policies and procedures to ensure all work is done accurately and efficiently.

  • Completes their timesheet daily and submits it promptly for weekly review and approval.
