PROJECT EXPERIENCE:
Washington Gas Company Master Services Surveying and Mapping Task Order Contract

Location: VA, MD AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Project Background: Washington Gas Company is a 160 year old enterprise that is headquartered in Washington, DC, and provides natural gas to over one million customers situated in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

Work Performed: Rice Associates has been working for Washington Gas for over five years and in 2006 the firm was awarded a Master Services Agreement. Rice Associates has provided a wide variety of surveying and mapping services in the states of Virginia and Maryland and also the District of Columbia. The firm completed over a dozen projects with tasks that have included preparing "Special Exception" and easement plats, performing regulator station boundary and topographic surveys, and performing detailed ground supplemented photogrammetric location surveys along busy highway corridors.

Representative assignments included:
  • US 50 Phases One and Two, Loudoun County, VA: Rice Associates performed a photogrammetric location survey of the Loudoun County Parkway (SR 606) and US 50 encompassing two miles of the Loudoun County Parkway and three and two tenths miles of US 50 for purposes of design and installation of a gas pipeline. The survey included property determinations, location of gravity and aerial utilities, as well as location of subsurface utilities determined from designation by others. The survey extended for a total distance of five and two tenths miles bordering Dulles Airport and varied suburban rural areas. Rice Associates also facilitated information sharing between Washington Gas and various land development engineering firms to help ascertain future conditions. The deliverable was an AutoCad drawing at one inch equals fifty feet depicting physical conditions, eighty properties, and topography. The firm provided an ortho-rectified image developed from the aerial photography.
  • Washington Gas Company
  • US Route 50 Phases One and Two Easement Plats, Loudoun County, VA: Rice Associates prepared fourteen individual easement plats creating a ten foot wide gas easement for the Washington Gas Engineering Department. The easements were created to best facilitate existing and future land uses, as well as minimizing acquisition costs. The easement plats were prepared in accordance with Washington Gas standards suitable for recordation in Loudoun County. Also included were the AutoCad files for future use by Washington Gas in proceeding with the next phase.
  • Loudoun County Parkway, Loudoun County, VA: Rice Associates performed a photogrammetric location survey of the Loudoun County Parkway from Belmont Ridge Road to Waxpool Road for purposes of design and installation of a gas pipeline. The survey included property determinations, location of gravity and aerial utilities, as well as location of subsurface utilities determined from designation by others. The survey extended for a distance of four and three quarter miles of suburban development encompassing an area three hundred feet wide. Rice Associates also facilitated information sharing between Washington Gas and various land development engineering firms to help ascertain future conditions. The deliverable was an AutoCad drawing at one inch equals thirty feet depicting physical conditions, one hundred plus properties, and topography.
